Section 208 of the E-Government Act of 2002 requires Federal agencies to conduct a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) before developing or procuring information technology systems or projects that collect, maintain or disseminate personally identifiable information about members of the public.
Federal agencies must prepare a PIA before a new electronic collection of information from 10 or more persons, consistent with the Paperwork Reduction Act (PRA) requirements. Section 208 of the E-Government Act also requires agencies to make PIAs public through some mechanism (Web site, Federal Register, or other).
