General Counsel Crystal S. Carey announced the appointment of Eric R. Schechter to Regional Director of the National Labor Relations Board, Region 22. As Regional Director, Mr. Schechter will lead the Region in its administration of elections, investigation of unfair labor practice charges, mentoring staff, and partnering with headquarters to advance Agency initiatives and strengthen service to the public. Region 22 is responsible for administration of the National Labor Relations Act in northern New Jersey, with an office in Newark, NJ.

Mr. Schechter earned a Master of Science in Industrial Relations and Human Resources from Rutgers University and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, with a minor in English, from the State University of New York at Albany. He began his NLRB career as a Co-Op student in Region 22 in 1988 and began his full-time employment as a career Field Examiner the following year.

In 2007, Mr. Schechter was promoted to Supervisory Examiner. In this role he oversaw investigations, elections, and compliance matters. In 2016, he advanced to Assistant Regional Director of Region 22, assuming broader responsibility for casehandling operations, supervisory management, and coordination with Agency leadership.

Mr. Schechter’s steady judgment, thoughtful guidance, and collaborative approach has earned him the respect of both staff and management, and his ability to navigate complex matters with professionalism and care strengthened the Region’s operations during periods of significant caseload pressure and organizational change.

“I have had the honor of working with Eric both inside and outside the Agency and have always admired his steadfast commitment to its mission. Eric’s thoughtful engagement with all parties reflects the essence of our work: achieving fair and equitable outcomes for everyone,” said General Counsel Carey. “Eric’s institutional knowledge, and calm leadership are invaluable. The Agency is fortunate to have him in this important role, and I look forward to working with Eric in the years ahead to advance its mission.”

Established in 1935, the National Labor Relations Board is an independent federal agency that protects employees from unfair labor practices and protects the right of private sector employees to join together, with or without a union, to improve wages, benefits and working conditions. The NLRB conducts hundreds of workplace elections and investigates thousands of unfair labor practice charges each year.
