Regional Director

Welcome to Region 18 of the National Labor Relations Board. We conduct elections, investigate charges of unfair labor practices, and protect the rights of workers to act together, serving the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and parts of Iowa from our regional office in Minneapolis, and subregional office in Milwaukee. If you have questions or wish to file a charge or petition for election, please visit one of our offices or call and ask for the Information Officer on duty. We can arrange to have someone speak with you in the language of your choice.  We are also happy to provide speakers and materials to promote a greater understanding of the National Labor Relations Act.

SEEKING VOLUNTARY FIELD EXAMINER INTERNS
This Regional Office participates in the NLRB’s Volunteer Field Examiners Program for undergraduate and graduate students.  The Volunteer FX interns assist in conducting unfair labor practice investigations, arranging representation elections, conducting elections and performing basic legal research. Volunteer Interns will work directly with agents and report to a supervisor who will guide them in handling case work and investigations. Interns may be briefed by senior officials from throughout the Region and Agency about the NLRB and the NLRA. Interns will be asked to produce written work products summarizing the results of investigations along with recommendations.  The Agency will work closely with participating schools to ensure class credit where permitted or desired and will provide on-the-job training as well as training on the NLRB through live and video presentations of the Agency’s Summer Intern Program and regularly scheduled Board Agent training.  Please click on the following link: Student Positions - Pathways and volunteer for more information.  

News From the Region

On February 5, 2013, Resident Officer Jennifer Hadsall and Field Examiner Charles Chermak presented “NLRB Basics, PCA, and Social Media” to students in the Labor Law course at Drake Law School in Des Moines, IA.

National Labor Relations Board Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon announced that he is considering a proposal to reorganize four Regional offices as part of an ongoing effort by the Agency to explore ways to restructure its operations in light of new technologies and changing patterns in case intake. 

In a series of settlements with the NLRB, a Wisconsin supermarket chain has agreed to solve all outstanding cases with the agency by signing collective bargaining agreements with the union representing its employees, reinstating discharged workers, providing about 500 employees a total of more than $570,000 in backpay, and keeping open a store that had been slated for closure.

A federal judge has ordered a Piggly Wiggly supermarket in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to restore full-time status and health insurance to employees whose hours were reduced to part-time without bargaining with their union, and to refrain from making such unilateral changes in the future.

Administrative Law Judge Arthur Amchan has found that a franchisee of the Jimmy Johns sandwich chain unlawfully discharged six employees after they staged a public campaign complaining of the company’s employee sick leave policy.
