Regional Director

Welcome to Region 1 of the National Labor Relations Board. We conduct elections, investigate charges of unfair labor practices, and protect the rights of workers to act together, serving most of New England from our offices in Boston and Hartford. If you have questions or wish to file a charge or petition for election, please visit our office or call and ask for the Information Officer on duty. We can arrange to have someone speak with you in the language of your choice. We are also happy to provide speakers and materials to promote a greater understanding of the National Labor Relations Act.

National Labor Relations Board Chairman Mark Gaston Pearce and Acting General Counsel Lafe Solomon have announced the appointment of John Cotter as Officer in Charge of the Agency's newly-designated Subregional office in Hartford, Connecticut (Subregion 34). In his new position, Mr. Cotter will assist Jonathan Kreisberg, Director of the NLRB’s Region 1 in Boston, in enforcing the National Labor Relations Act in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.  Mr.

The National Labor Relations Board has approved the formal restructuring of several regional offices, as proposed in July and adjusted in October, after evaluating feedback from members of Congress, NLRB staff, and the public, and conducting a pilot program in the field.

A U.S. District Court Judge in Connecticut has ordered the Stamford Plaza Hotel and Conference Center to reinstate 28 employees who were laid off, then rehired by a subcontractor to perform the same work, after they expressed support for a union. 

The layoffs occurred just weeks after the United Food & Commercial Workers Union, Local 371, began gathering signatures for a unionization effort in June 2011. The two hotel operations that were subcontracted, housekeeping and maintenance, had demonstrated the strongest level of union support.

A Connecticut nursing home chain engaged in a pattern of bad faith bargaining and unlawfully locked out the unionized employees at one of its homes, the NLRB alleged in a complaint issued today.

This is the fourth complaint issued against the employer by the NLRB Hartford Regional Office involving conduct that occurred over the past two years.

A National Labor Relations Board Administrative Law Judge ordered on Wednesday that two employees of the Connecticut Humane Society be reinstated and awarded backpay because they were unlawfully discharged following an organizing campaign.
