Welcome to Region 18 of the National Labor Relations Board. We conduct elections, investigate charges of unfair labor practices, and protect the rights of workers to act together, serving the states of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and parts of Iowa from our regional office in Minneapolis, subregional office in Milwaukee, and resident office in Des Moines. A federal judge has ordered a Piggly Wiggly supermarket in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to restore full-time status and health insurance to employees whose hours were reduced to part-time without bargaining with their union, and to refrain from making such unilateral changes in the future.

Administrative Law Judge Arthur Amchan has found that a franchisee of the Jimmy Johns sandwich chain unlawfully discharged six employees after they staged a public campaign complaining of the company’s employee sick leave policy.

A complaint issued today by the National Labor Relations Board alleges that six employees of Jimmy John’s, an Minneapolis area fast food restaurant, were unlawfully disciplined, threatened, and ultimately terminated for engaging in union and other concerted protected activities.

According to the complaint, the six employees were fired on March 22 and 23, 2011, because of their support for the Union, and also because of their concerted protest about Jimmy John’s sick leave policy. Another four employees were given final written warnings for engaging in the same conduct.

An NLRB administrative law judge has found that parts supplier Supply Technologies LLC unlawfully required employees to sign up for a comprehensive grievance and arbitration system that would eliminate their rights under the National Labor Relations Act, and then discharged 20 employees when they refused to do so. 

A Milwaukee job training center has agreed to reinstate two employees who were fired after jointly seeking help for problems with their pay, which is protected activity under the National Labor Relations Act. 

Esperanza Unida, a non-profit center that caters to low-income residents, agreed to the settlement on the opening day of a hearing before an NLRB administrative law judge, April 27. The center will also provide backpay to the two employees amounting to more than $22,000, and will change its overly-broad confidentiality policy. There is no union involved in the workplace.
